why a blog?

why a blog?

I've become quite disillusioned with social media lately. And the internet in general. While I do appreciate the easy ability to connect with friends near and far, it's too easy to fall into a mindless scrolling state in which I lose hours of the day to videos of cats and home decor inspo for a house I do not own. It is nice to find cool artists, or to swipe through the monthly photo dumps of pals, but I find it hard sometimes to have the self control to leave it at that.

I was inspired to start a blog by my dear friend Chance, who runs his own blog, Good Morning Magpie, which I will link below (you should definitely check it out, I may be new to the whole blogging endeavour, but he's got a really good thing going there). I was drawn in by the customizability and low pressure of blogging, and I'm hoping this will be a way to stay connected without falling into the social media trap of likes and scrolling. The intentionality of writing out a blog post and curating photos to go with it is promising, as it will require me to slow down and creates more space for reflection. My dream is that this blog helps me stay more present, and also acts as archive of my life.

Also, I'm about to go on a pretty wild adventure. Making a transatlantic move to a country I've never been to before. I want to share that journey with my friends back home in a more meaningful way than a quick story post on instagram. I think that through using hello squirrel, I can be a more in-depth storyteller and share my life more vividly.

All in all, I'm just excited to figure this out as I go! A blog really can be anything, so we'll see what this ends up being for me as I do it. Poetry? Travel blogging? Art dumps? Weekly updates? Posts about cool animals? A cryptic ARG? Who knows!
